- A power steering oil tank (or reservoir) is a container that stores the hydraulic fluid (power steering fluid) used by a vehicle’s hydraulic steering system. It supplies fluid to the power-steering pump, receives returning fluid from the steering gear, accommodates volume changes (e.g. due to thermal expansion), filters impurities and air, and provides a means to check and refill fluid.Without a properly functioning reservoir, the power-steering system cannot maintain consistent fluid supply, which may lead to steering stiffness, increased wear, or failure of steering components.
