- The Valve Cotter (also called a valve keeper or valve collet) is a small but critical component used in an internal combustion engine’s valve train. It secures the valve spring retainer to the valve stem, ensuring that the valve spring remains properly positioned during engine operation. Valve cotters are usually supplied as two small tapered halves that fit into a groove on the valve stem. When the valve spring retainer is installed and compressed by the valve spring, the cotters lock into place and hold the entire valve assembly securely. Despite their small size, valve cotters must withstand high engine speeds, repeated stress, and temperature variations, so they are typically made from hardened steel for durability and reliability.
