  • A speedometer cable is a flexible, spiral-wound metal cable (inner core) running inside a protective outer sheath. One end connects to the vehicle’s transmission (or wheel hub, depending on design), and the other end attaches to the back of the speedometer gauge on the dashboard. As the vehicle moves, the transmission output shaft turns a driving gear, which rotates the inner cable. The rotation is transferred via the cable to a magnet inside the speedometer gauge; as the magnet spins, it causes a metal cup (attached to the speedometer needle) to rotate, which moves the needle and displays the vehicle’s speed. Because it mechanically links the gearbox to the instrument cluster, a speedometer cable also drives the odometer — allowing the vehicle to track distance travelled. Speedometer cables are common in older/mechanical-speedometer vehicles, motorcycles, and simpler transmission designs, and remain a reliable, cost-effective solution where electronic sensors are not used.
